Step-by-step (detailed)
When you first connect your hardware wallet, the device may prompt you to install firmware β this is normal. Always use the official start site and the official app to download firmware and to initialize the wallet. Keep your computer offline while you write down your recovery backup, and always record that backup on paper (or metal) β never store it digitally.
During the "create wallet" flow you'll be shown a sequence of recovery words (sometimes called a seed or backup). Write each word down in order, then verify that your notebook/card contains the words correctly. Store this backup in a secure location β ideally at least two geographically-separated secure places (for example, a home safe and a safety deposit box).
The device lets you set a PIN; pick a PIN that is memorable to you but hard for others to guess. If you ever forget the PIN, you can restore access only by using your recovery backup, so treat it like the master key to your funds.
Safety tips
- Do not share your recovery words with anyone β no one from support will ever ask for them.
- If the device packaging or tamper-evident seals look altered, do not use the device and contact official support.
- Perform a small test transfer after setup before moving large amounts.
If you're migrating funds from exchanges or software wallets, transfer only a small amount first to verify that addresses and confirmations are correct. Check network fees and confirm the transaction on your device screen β the device displays addresses for you to verify visually, which helps prevent address-stealing attacks.
When to ask for help
If anything about the device or setup appears unusual β unexpected firmware prompts, mismatched device names, or requests for your recovery words β stop and reach out to official support channels. Book an expert onboarding session if you prefer guided help.
